Fishing Report - May 7, 2026

Chris Lawson

Henry's Fork:

The weather here in Henry's Fork Country has been a bit all over the place, so the fishing reflects it. We just got out of a cold snap, which likely pushed the Salmonfly Hatch back a few days. Currently, there are a few shucks on the Vernon Bridge, so I think it is safe to say the hatch is starting. That is big news of the day. On all reaches of the river, nymph fishing has been very good. The best nymphs to use are a size 6 Pat's Rubberlegs and trail a size 16 olive spanish bullet quill. This combo is deadly. Be on the lookout for adult salmonflies on the lower river below Ashton, and don't be afraid to put on a big size 6 Chubby with a Pat's Rubberlegs as a dropper. Also, if there are some clouds, we have been seeing some decent hatches of March Brown Drakes. I like a size 14 Renegade or a size 14 or 16 parachute Adams for imitations. The mother's day caddis are winding down on the lower river, but they are hatching up here in Island Park around Riverside Campground. Use size 16 Olive EZ caddis to match this pattern. Please note that the river is very low, so the fish might not be up on the banks like they normally would be in a normal water year.

Madison:

The Madison has been getting some really good Mother's Day caddis hatching, and you can do really well in the wade sections of the river upstream from Lyon's bridge. Again, the EZ caddis is a great imitation. I also like to use Mike Lawson's Partridge caddis emerger in Olive size 16 and trail it behind the EZ Caddis. This is a deadly combo. If nothing is happening on top, nymphing has also been very productive. I like using a size 14 red or brown zebra midge trailing a Pat's Rubberlegs.

South Fork:

They are moving a lot of water out of the Palisades Dam right now and sending it downstream to satisfy irrigation demands and to help fill the American Falls Reservoir. There is still some decent nymph and streamer fishing. I would again recommend a black Rubberlegs, but it can be really effective using a san jaun worm as a dropper. I love using any flashy streamer. Some of my favorites are the Coffey Sparkle Minnow in Sculpin, the Lil' Kim in Olive and copper, and the Inverted Hen Saddle Matuka. It is a lot more work throwing streamers, but the fish you catch on them usually make it worth it.

Teton:

The Teton River is obviously running much lower than it normally does this time of year. There isn't a ton of dry-fly action that I know of, but it can still be very good nymphing and streamer fishing. We had one of our guides fishing streamers below the Teton Dam the other day, and had some great action in Kelly Galloup's Dungeon
