Planning Your Trip

Planning Your Trip

There’s something special about the places trout live. In these places, time slows down, and the rhythmic cast of a fly rod feels like second nature. Or at least, that’s the goal—until you find yourself untangling a mess and listening to your fishing buddy laugh at you. For those planning a fly-fishing trip with Henry’s Fork Anglers, preparation is key. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a first-timer eager to experience the thrill of a rising trout, knowing what to expect can make all the difference.

From choosing the best time to visit and packing the right gear, planning a successful trip goes beyond just booking a guide. You’ll want to be ready for changing conditions, select the right lodging, and navigate travel logistics to ensure a smooth journey. It is part of our job to make this trip as smooth as possible.

The closest major airport is Idaho Falls Regional Airport (IDA), about 80 miles from Henry’s Fork Anglers. For more flight options, Bozeman Montana (BZN), Jackson Hole Wyoming (JAC) and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is roughly a four-hour drive. Renting a car is the best way to reach your destination, and the drive offers stunning scenery—just watch out for wildlife along the way. It is not uncommon to have an elk or a deer run out in front of you.

For those who prefer not to drive, shuttle services are available from Idaho Falls to Island Park and surrounding areas, but they require advance booking. A little planning goes a long way in ensuring you arrive ready to fish.

When it comes to accommodations, there’s something for every budget and preference. For a full-service experience, Henry’s Fork Lodge offers comfortable rooms, fine dining, and stunning river views. Elk Creek Ranch provides a secluded, upscale retreat with breathtaking scenery and easy water access. Lakeside Lodge in Island Park offers cozy cabins with a laid-back atmosphere, perfect for relaxing after a long day on the river.

If you prefer a more private stay, vacation rentals and Airbnb’s range from luxurious riverside homes to budget-friendly cabins. For cost-conscious travelers, motels in Ashton and Island Park provide clean, comfortable accommodations.

For those who love the outdoors, there are several forest service campgrounds near our shop, and they offer easy river access. You can check out Riverside Campground, Box Canyon Campground, Warm River Campground and Buffalo Campground. If you do choose to camp, make sure to be bear aware and don’t leave food out, as you might get a visit from a friendly grizzly bear. No matter where you stay, booking early is recommended, especially during peak fishing season.

Henry’s Fork offers year-round fishing, but each season has its highlights. The most popular time to fish the Henry’s Fork is in May and June. This is when the Henry’s Fork has its best hatches including the Salmon flies, green drakes, and PMDs. The other rivers in the area may be affected by winter runoff, so the Henry’s Fork can get crowded. To book a guide in June, you’ll want to book several months in advance. While the Henry’s Fork is the crown jewel, Henry’s Fork Anglers also guide several other incredible fisheries in the region, including the Madison River in Montana, Teton River, South Fork of the Snake and all of Yellowstone National Park. These Rivers usually start fishing the best in July and continue to stay productive throughout the rest of the season until it’s too cold to fish. My personal recommendation on the very best time to book a trip would be July and August. This is when you have the most versatility of fishing areas. With all of the watersheds fishing well, people tend to spread out so most of the fishing areas aren’t as crowded. The Fall months of September and October also provide some of the best fishing of the year with excellent hatches of Blue Wing Olives and Mahogany Duns as well as some great streamer and nymph fishing. It is also pleasant to view all the Fall colors, however, you will want to be prepared for some unpleasant weather.

To make the most of your guided trip, come prepared with the right essentials. I have included a list of some things you might consider bringing with you on your trip.
