Box Canyon

The Box Canyon of the Henry's Fork is a dramatic and renowned section of the river, characterized by its steep, basalt canyon walls. This roughly three-mile stretch below Island Park Dam offers a unique and challenging fishing experience. The powerful current, combined with the confined canyon, creates deep runs, turbulent riffles, and limited wading opportunities. Anglers navigating this section often rely on drift boats or carefully chosen access points to target the large, wild rainbow trout that thrive in its nutrient-rich waters. The stark beauty of the canyon, coupled with the allure of trophy fish, makes the Box Canyon a truly unforgettable destination for experienced fly fishermen.

Dry fly fishing in “the Box” is productive in early June when the salmonflies and golden stones emerge, but nymphs and streamers are effective throughout the entire season, well into November. Because it is a short float, our guides often walk the boat to allow their clients an opportunity to effectively cover the best runs and pools.

Wade fishing Box Canyon is not for the faint of heart. Navigating the fast, rocky water can be tricky but wade fishing is a great way to really cover the water. There is a hiking trail the entire length of the canyon with good access points through the reach from Old Highway 191.
